On June 1, 2024, a significant explosion destroyed a townhouse on Waikanda Crescent in Whalan, western Sydney. Emergency services, including Fire and Rescue New South Wales, police, and paramedics, responded to the incident shortly before 1pm. The blast’s intensity demolished the townhouse and shattered windows in adjacent units.

Two women, one in her 60s and another in her 70s who uses a wheelchair, were rescued from the rubble and are now in the care of paramedics. At least one person remains unaccounted for, and five individuals have been hospitalized. Residents from at least 12 surrounding homes have been evacuated.

The gas supply to the building has been cut off, and investigations into the cause of the explosion are underway, with an early indication suggesting a possible gas leak. Emergency services and gas company personnel continue to stabilize the scene while ensuring public safety. Residents and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
