Residents of Witney, Horsham, and Oxford are taking on physical challenges to raise funds for cancer research and palliative care in Ukraine. Steve Rance, Kate Wyatt, and Dr. Rachel Clarke have inspiring stories of overcoming personal challenges to support important causes.
Witney Man Takes on Unique Marathon with Trolley and Mannequin
Steve Rance from Witney, diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Cancer in 2021, is set to walk a 26.2-mile marathon around his hometown on June 8. Rance will push a shopping trolley carrying a mannequin named ‘Cedric,’ to raise funds for Neuroendocrine Cancer UK and Cancer Research UK. Despite being given eight months to live and undergoing major surgery, he now has a stable diagnosis and has raised £3,183.72 of his £5,000 goal.
Horsham Woman Runs Race for Life in Memory of Her Mother
Kate Wyatt will participate in Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life in Horsham to honor her mother, Sheila, who died of aggressive lung cancer. Diagnosed with stage three breast cancer herself, Kate has undergone extensive treatment and raised £1,200 so far. The event will include Team Kate, consisting of family and friends, along with Kate’s dachshund Selly.
Oxford Doctor Competes in Triathlon for Ukraine Health Service
Dr. Rachel Clarke from Oxford will participate in the Blenheim Palace Triathlon on June 1 to raise funds for Hospice Ukraine, a charity she co-founded with neurosurgeon Henry Marsh. The charity aims to improve palliative care in Ukraine, which has been severely affected by the Russian invasion. The initial target of £5,000 has been surpassed, raising more than £8,700. Dr. Clarke will visit Ukraine again this August to continue her support efforts.
