Minneapolis, May 30, 2024 – A shooting incident on Thursday evening in Minneapolis’ Whittier neighborhood resulted in three fatalities, including a Minneapolis police officer and the suspect. The incident unfolded at an apartment complex in the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South around 5:30 PM.
Authorities reported that officers responded to a call regarding a double shooting at the location. Upon arrival, they were immediately fired upon and returned fire. The deceased officer has been identified as Jamal Mitchell, 28. Another officer and a firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while one civilian was gravely injured.
The gunfire also claimed the life of another civilian, found dead at the scene. The circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear, with no immediate details provided.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed his concern, stating that the state is prepared to offer necessary resources. The Minneapolis Police Department assured the public that there is no ongoing danger.
Witness Reuben Molina recounted hearing rapid gunfire from his apartment and observing people fleeing the building. Law enforcement, along with federal agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to manage the situation and assist in the investigation.
