In an innovative response to the global plastic waste crisis, SpartanNash, a prominent food solutions company, has unveiled a project that not only recycles plastic grocery bags but also transforms them into life-enhancing accessible ramps for veterans with disabilities. The initiative, launched on Earth Day, underscores a growing trend where corporations integrate social responsibility with environmental stewardship.

SpartanNash has partnered with Home Repair Services and Trex® Company, a leader in eco-friendly decking materials, to create the ramps from plastic bags collected at various SpartanNash-operated stores, including Family Fare, D&W Fresh Market, and Forest Hills Foods. The project is not just a nod towards recycling but is a profound gesture towards providing mobility solutions for veterans, enabling them to enjoy more comfortable and accessible living conditions.

The process involves collecting the plastic bags and converting them into composite decking material, a specialty of Trex® Company. It’s estimated that each ramp requires about 157,500 recycled plastic bags to build, illustrating the massive scale of plastic use and the potential for its reuse in constructive ways. This initiative is especially significant as it targets plastics that are typically not accepted in standard recycling programs, thus preventing them from ending up in landfills.

According to Adrienne Chance, Senior Vice President of Communications at SpartanNash, the project not only helps the environment by reducing landfill waste but also aids in making life easier for veterans with disabilities. This initiative is part of SpartanNash’s broader commitment to fostering a “People First” culture, supporting community members in tangible, impactful ways.

Dave Heglas, Senior Director of Supply Chain Excellence at Trex, emphasized the dual benefit of the initiative: environmental and social. By repurposing plastic waste into durable, low-maintenance ramps, the project helps veterans gain better access to and from their homes, enhancing their quality of life.

The collaboration reflects a growing trend of companies using their resources and reach to tackle significant social and environmental issues. For SpartanNash, this project goes beyond corporate responsibility—it’s an embodiment of their mission to deliver “the ingredients for a better life.” This encompasses not just the food products they distribute but also the supportive infrastructure they help create for vulnerable communities.

This initiative is particularly poignant given the ongoing challenges with plastic pollution. Reports indicate that millions of tons of plastic waste are generated yearly, with a significant portion not being recycled. Projects like this serve as a beacon of innovation and practicality, demonstrating effective ways businesses can contribute to sustainability.

Recycling bins for plastic bags are a staple feature in SpartanNash stores, with over 1,000 pounds of plastic bags collected for recycling since the inception of this project in 2023. For those interested in contributing to this environmental cause, participating in the project is as simple as using recycling services provided at SpartanNash locations.

By blending ecological awareness with social responsibility, SpartanNash and its partners are setting a commendable example of how businesses can be powerful forces for good, tackling pressing global issues through local, actionable initiatives that have both immediate and long-term benefits.
