On May 23, 2024, a two-story restaurant and nightclub in Playa de Palma, Mallorca, collapsed, resulting in the death of four individuals and injuring at least sixteen others. The building, identified as the Medusa Beach Club, is popular with British and German tourists. At approximately 8:45 PM local time, the terrace of the two-story building reportedly collapsed through to the basement, leaving only the façade standing.
Rescue operations commenced immediately, with around 100 emergency responders on-site. Efforts to locate survivors continued into the night, with emergency crews advising gathered crowds to remain silent to detect sounds from those potentially trapped under the rubble. Psychologists were also present to support affected individuals.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Islands, expressed their condolences and support for the affected families and local authorities. The causes of the collapse are still under investigation. The incident led to the temporary suspension of political campaigns for the upcoming European elections out of respect for the victims.
The Medusa Beach Club had recently unveiled a new rooftop bar just days before the collapse. Authorities have not yet released the identities of all the deceased.
