As generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies continue to evolve and integrate within organizational infrastructures across the globe, a new study highlights the significant challenges and opportunities faced by enterprises in 2024. According to comprehensive research conducted by BigID, a leader in AI-augmented data security, while generative AI presents unprecedented potential for innovation and efficiency, data security remains the principal concern for a majority of organizations.
Generative AI, including advanced tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and other large language models (LLMs), has considerably transformed how businesses operate, offering solutions that range from content creation to complex problem-solving. However, alongside the benefits, these technologies also introduce new risks, particularly related to the security and privacy of the data they handle.
BigID’s “2024 Global Report on Generative AI: Breakthroughs & Barriers” reveals that over two-thirds of organizations view data security risks as their top concern when deploying generative AI technologies. Furthermore, fifty percent of these organizations view data security as the most challenging aspect of AI implementation. This apprehension is underscored by the finding that nearly half of the organizations surveyed have experienced adverse business outcomes due to AI usage, including data breaches.
The survey, which gathered insights from 327 IT decision-makers and influencers from a diverse range of industries and regions, underscores a significant lack of confidence in meeting future AI regulations; 73% of respondents admitted to this uncertainty. This gap highlights a crucial need for frameworks that can support compliant and secure adoption of AI technologies.
In response to these challenges, regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act and recent US Executive Orders have been introduced to guide and manage the adoption of AI technologies. These regulations are designed to mitigate the risks associated with AI, ensuring that the advancements in this technology are matched with equivalent strides in data protection and regulatory compliance.
